Higgs and Englert Win Nobel Prize

Octogenarians Peter Higgs (Great Britain) and Francois Englert (Belgium) have received this year's Nobel Prize in Physics for their theorizing (independently from each other) half a century ago of a particular that has come to be known as the Higgs boson. The Higgs, which gives mass to particles, was discovered about a year ago at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in Europe, after a painstaking search. Back in 2007, I wrote an explanation of what the Higgs boson was all about. According to this NBC News article, the LHC is currently closed until 2015 for "maintenance and upgrades."
